Numeracy is the ability to understand and apply maths skills in all aspects of daily life. It is estimated that around half of adults in the UK have numeracy skills at primary school level.

Count Me In is designed so that someone who is less confident with numeracy, the learner, can be coached by someone who is more confident and able to explain instructions. The programme is designed with the needs of learners who may have previously struggled with numeracy in mind, such as those with neurodiversity issues, including dyscalculia.

Count Me In begins with basic skills, such as writing and ordering numbers, ensuring that learners have a secure foundation to build from. The programme then moves onto calculating skills and other practical topics, such as telling the time and understanding money.

Count Me In applies wider learning principles that we know work well from our long-established Turning Pages reading programme:

  • Each activity has full instructions and answers for the mentor
  • Learners undertake regular, short sessions of around 30 minutes
  • Manuals contain parking pages and progress checks, so learners can revisit anything they struggle with and track their learning
  • Topics are interleaved to help learners retrieve and build on prior learning
  • The manuals enable learners to see rapid and quantifiable progress

Count Me In is comprised of 5 manuals, which cover content from the Functional Skills Mathematics Entry Levels 1 to 3 qualifications, with some additional Level 1 skills likely to be of particular use to learners in their daily lives. No equipment, including calculators or rulers, is required.

By the end of manual 3, learners will have covered the following skills:

  • Number skills (including ordering, rounding and writing) up to 100
  • Finding 5% of a number
  • Adding and subtracting three-digit numbers
  • Units of length, weight and capacity
  • Reading pictograms
  • Area and perimeter of different shapes
  • Multiplication and division – 7, 8 and 9
  • Introduction to decimals
  • More on telling the time – quarter past and quarter to
